"The Art Of Influencing Others Using WIIFM" stands for "What's In It For Me," and it's a concept that recognizes that people often make decisions and take action based on how they perceive a personal benefit or gain. The idea behind this approach is to understand and leverage the motivations and self-interest of others when seeking to influence or persuade them. Here's what it means and how it works:
- WIIFM (What's In It For Me?):This is the fundamental question that people unconsciously ask when presented with an idea, proposal, or request. They want to know how it will benefit them personally. Understanding this principle is key to effective influence.
- Techniques to Identify Others' Needs: The first step in influencing others using WIIFM is to understand what the other person's needs, desires, and priorities are. This involves active listening, empathy, and asking probing questions to uncover their motivations.
- Positioning Ideas and Approaches: Once you've identified the other person's needs, the next step is to tailor your message, proposal, or approach in a way that clearly demonstrates how it aligns with their interests and benefits them. This involves articulating the "What's In It For Me" aspect.
- Moving Projects Forward: By presenting your ideas, proposals, or requests in a way that clearly addresses the WIIFM for the other person, you are more likely to gain their support and cooperation. This, in turn, helps move projects and work forward more effectively and efficiently.
- Faster Progress: When individuals feel that their needs and interests are being taken into account, they are more motivated to engage, make decisions, and take action. As a result, projects and work can progress at a quicker pace.
The "The Art Of Influencing Others Using WIIFM" field training is designed to teach participants how to become more persuasive and effective in their communication and interactions. By understanding the principle that people are inherently self-interested and motivated by personal benefit, and by tailoring their messages and proposals accordingly, participants can influence others more successfully and achieve better outcomes.
This concept is widely used in marketing, sales, negotiation, and leadership, as it helps individuals understand and appeal to the motivations and needs of their audience, whether it's a customer, team member, or colleague.
